Anthropic's June 2026 Economic Index report introduces a new metric, "Cadence," measuring the ratio of conversation steps a developer takes with Claude to ship a unit of code. Median Cadence fell 31% since January, with TypeScript backends the most autonomous and regulated-indust

The Cadence metric is Anthropic's attempt to quantify how much human steering an autonomous coding loop still requires. The report breaks the number down by language, team size, and project type, and ships raw aggregates so enterprise procurement teams can benchmark their own Claude Code usage against the population. The 31% drop is presented as evidence that longer-running agent sessions are actually delivering more code per human turn — the headline Anthropic has been pressing for the last two months. Worth reading against the same week's The Register piece on AI coding agents potentially costing more than the developers using them: Cadence going down is good for productivity, but it's also the lever that drives token bills up.
